Saves
Use named saves to keep important stages of the city, and export a file when you want a copy outside the game's local storage.
Saving a city
Open Options and choose Save City to update the current save slot. Save City As lets you keep the current moment under another name and continue playing.
The city's name and a save's name are separate. One city can have saves named after its founding layout, a later milestone or a transport redesign. Creating a new save name does not rename the city inside it.
The calendar is held while a save is prepared, and the interface shows Saving. A save finishes the day already in progress before recording the city. Wait for the operation to finish before closing the game.
Autosave
The Game options offer autosave every month, every year or Off. These intervals use the game calendar, not real minutes.
Autosave writes to the city's own autosave slot and replaces its previous autosave. It does not overwrite an intentionally named manual save. Load Game marks autosave slots so you can distinguish them.
Loading and exporting
From the main menu, open Load Game. Select Load beside the save you want. Check its city name, save name and recorded date if several slots hold the same city.
Export downloads a saved city as a .city file. Import reads a city file into local saves, under the file's name. If a save already has that name, the game asks first: keep both, which files the import under a numbered name such as Springwood (2), replace the existing save, or cancel. Export useful milestones before clearing browser data or moving to another browser or device.
Browser saves belong to that browser's local storage. A browser may remove them under storage pressure if it has not granted durable storage; the Load Game screen reports that condition. An exported file gives you a copy you control.
The lite version opens only cities made in the lite version: it refuses a desktop city whatever its mode or map size, and any city larger than its 256×256 map limit. A refused import is not stored. The desktop version opens every city, lite ones included. A lite city saved again in the desktop version becomes a desktop city. See Lite and desktop versions.
Before a major change
Use Save City As before a major change to keep a copy you can return to.
If a save or export fails, read the displayed error, keep the game open and address the storage problem before relying on that copy. See Troubleshooting.
